Social Security Disability For Children

by | Jan 13, 2016 | Law

Children we suffer from disabilities may be qualified to receive Supplemental Security Income payments on a monthly basis. SSI is need-based only and is available to families who have no assets and low income. Children do not qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits because this is specifically for disabled people who have previously worked and earned Social Security. SSI is available for children but there is a process that you must go through in order to apply for a child’s benefits.

Disability Benefits for Children

There are three different ways that children can collect SSI disability benefits or social security benefits. All of these benefits are paid out to the disabled child or to the children of retired workers who are currently disabled. These are the three different ways that children can receive SSI benefits.

* Disabled children in a low-income household and under the age of 18 can receive SSI benefits. These children will also be eligible for Medicaid.
* If a child is under the age of 18 and does not qualify for SSI and currently has a parent who receives Social Security Disability Income or retirement benefits, might be able to collect the benefits belonging to the dependent, depending on the parents’ records.
* If an adult has been disabled since childhood and are currently older than 18 but were disabled before they turned 22, should be able to collect social security benefits if they currently have a parent who is collecting Social Security Disability Income.

Disabled Children

SSI may be available to adults and children who currently meet the requirements for disability set by the Social Security Administration but have no income. Some of the income from the parents are used to determine whether or not the child is currently eligible for Social Security Insurance. Once the child is over the age of 18, they will have to apply for SSI on their own and must currently fit the SSA’s definition of being disabled. This is even if the child is still residing at home with the parents and being cared for.
